VHIS tax deduction
自願醫保扣稅
The premium for a qualifying Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme plan bought for yourself or a specified relative can be claimed as a deduction when salaries tax or personal assessment is worked out, with a yearly cap for each insured person. The deduction comes off taxable income rather than off the tax itself, so how much tax it saves depends on your marginal tax rate. The cap is the amount the Inland Revenue Department publishes.
Example
Suppose the qualifying premium is HK$6,000 (within the cap) and the marginal tax rate is 10%.
- Qualifying premium
- HK$6,000
- Marginal tax rate
- 10%
- Tax saved
- about HK$600
A HK$6,000 premium cuts the tax bill by about HK$600; it is not refunded in full.
