Foreign transaction fee
外幣交易費
A foreign transaction fee is what a card issuer charges, as a percentage of the amount, when you spend in a foreign currency or at an overseas merchant. The final amount in Hong Kong dollars is decided by the exchange rate and this fee together. The percentage differs from card to card, and the statement shows the amount actually charged.
Example
Suppose you spend US$100 at an exchange rate of 7.80 with a 2% foreign transaction fee.
- Spending
- US$100
- After conversion
- HK$780
- Foreign transaction fee 2%
- HK$15.60
- Amount charged
- HK$795.60
The charge is HK$15.60 more than the HK$780 the exchange alone gives.
