Deposit protection limit
存款保障上限
The Deposit Protection Scheme, run by the Deposit Protection Board, pays a depositor's eligible deposits at a bank that fails, up to HK$800,000 per depositor per member bank. The limit applies bank by bank: deposits at different banks are each protected, while several accounts at the same bank are added together. Investment products are not deposits and are not covered.
Example
Suppose the limit is HK$800,000 and one person has two accounts at Bank A and one at Bank B.
- Bank A: savings account
- HK$600,000
- Bank A: current account
- HK$400,000
- Bank A total
- HK$1,000,000
- Bank A protected
- HK$800,000
- Bank B: savings account
- HK$300,000, fully protected
The HK$200,000 over the limit at Bank A is not protected; Bank B is counted separately.
